Cairns FC have moved into round six of the FFA Cup after an emphatic victory in last night’s Far North Queensland preliminary play-off against Southside Comets.
The away side pulled off an incredible comeback win dubbed ‘The Great Escape’ after scoring twice in the 90th minute to pull the game level and send it to extra-time.
Having Josh De Nittis and Bronson Koppen on the receiving end of red cards, a nine man Cairns FC prevailed in extra time.
It was a tough one to swallow for Southside Comets who, having lead the match for 90 minutes were only seconds away from a historic victory. The home side dominated for large periods of the match and were rewarded early in the 8th minute through Will Monin.
Shortly after half-time, The Comets had doubled the lead through Hiroto Higuchi and there was a genuine belief that a ‘Cupset’ on the cards.
However, Jamie Carol had other ideas bagging a brace in the final minutes of the match. His second, a free kick from outside the 18 yard box in the dying seconds of the match.
Despite Higuchi finding the back of the net in extra-time, it wasn’t enough to overcome a Josh Taylor brace for Cairns FC.
The victory has set up a round six clash with fellow National Premier League Queensland outfit North Queensland United, who also prevailed in an extra time heart-stopper over local Townsville side MA Olympic FC.
The details for the round six fixture are yet to be confirmed.
